This Monday at 6 pm at Jack Taylor Stadium, The Seguin Boy’s Soccer team will play it’s first playoff game in almost 20 years.  The Matadors finished 4th in district with a 4-5-1 district record and a 14-9-2 record overall.  Some of the seniors on the team have labored for four years to accomplish this goal and they are all eager to meet their next opponent, San Antonio Reagan, ranked #1 in the metropolitan area by the San Antonio Express.  The Mats know that it’s going to be a tough match but they are also confident that they can get a positive result.

This last Tuesday night, the mighty Matadors took on the Wagner Thunderbirds in their final district match and emerged with a 3-1 victory.  Seguin started out a bit slow and Wagner, with nothing to lose, came out with all cylinders firing.  However, 18 minutes into the game, Seguin drew first blood when a long throw by Senior defender Riley Koenig found the feet of Sophomore striker Alonzo Aldama and the wily forward faked right, went left and buried the ball in the left side of the net.  A second goal was added in the 25th minute when Koenig struck a perfect corner to the head of Senior defender Edgar Villamil whose header forced the Wagner keeper to parry to ball wide.  But it wasn’t wide enough to stop Senior midfielder Abraham Moreno from bundling the ball into the net.

At this point, Seguin made the mistake of relaxing and the Thunderbirds poured it on, putting a goal of their own in at the 27th minute.  The rest of the first half was somewhat uneventful and the Matadors ended the half with a one goal lead, which, in soccer, is a bit like standing on jello.  And even though the Mats knew that a loss in this game would not make any difference in the standings, they wanted to win their last home game in front of their fans–especially the seniors.  This was Senior Parent night and they were possibly playing their last game in Matador Stadium.

Wagner started the second half fired up.  They could smell blood and they badly wanted to play the spoiler role.  But before they took the field, the Seguin players were reminded that it was Wagner that knocked them out of the playoffs the previous year and the Mats were in no mood for a repeat performance.  So the Matadors took everything the Thunderbirds could throw at them and the game began to turn in Seguin’s favor.  By the 55th minute, the deal was sealed when Moreno headed in a second goal off of a second Koenig corner and the Mats led 3-1.  From that point on, every non-starting senior as well as the other bench players were put into the game so that everyone could share in the victory.
