Career and Technical Education (CTE) prepares students for post-secondary education and careers.  Every student should graduate with the knowledge and skills to be successful in post-secondary education AND to be able to participate in high-skill/high-wage jobs in today's competitive workforce.  The Texas Education Agency has begun an initiative to have every high school student complete a four year plan.  The program is Achieve Texas, www.achievetexas.org.  The site describes the 16 career clusters identified by the US Department of Labor.  The clusters are a way to organize types of jobs, or occupations.  Seguin High School counselors work with students in eighth grade to help them and their parents identify a career cluster of interest, and to participate in a four year program of study in high school that proivdes the student with an opportunity to become proficient in high-skill/high-wage careers.  Choosing an area of focus Some students go to college, but everyone goes to work!

Workforce statistics show that only 15% of available jobs in 2016 will require a high school diploma, and 20% of the jobs will require a four year college degree.  But 65% of the jobs will require a high school diploma and some type of certification, AAS degree or training, but less than a four year degree.  Even if students decide to enter a four year college program, they can still have high level skills and certifications earned at the high school level to help pay for the college program.  Dual credit is also available in some CTE classes.

The Texas Education Agency has mandated that all Career and Technical Education TEKS (Texas Essential knowledge and Skills) be revised and implemented beginning with the 2010-2011 school year.  Seguin High School is proud to offer 23 programs of study in 13 career clusters.  Below you will see the diagrams of the programs of study (POS) which are called "coherent sequences".  The diagrams show which courses to take for each program of study and the correct order in which the courses should be taken.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your counselor or the assistant principal for CTE at 830-372-5770.
